Technology Can Do That For Me

My name is Duncan Brown and I am an English Facilitator, here are some of my thoughts about learning the English language. 

Over the last few years, AI has been in the news for a number of reasons: its successes, unusual applications, the morality of using it, and general opinions from experts and laymen alike. It’s amazing, wonderful, it will solve all humanity's problems, it will steal people’s jobs, and it’s dangerous. Have you seen Terminator?

If AI’s references are all human-based then, in my uneducated opinion, it will be excellent but flawed just as people can be. It’s a tool and is only as good as the person who made it and how someone else will use it.

The advancement in technologies has replaced some things and facilitated some aspects of our lives, just the fact that you are reading this now is proof of that. As for it replacing learning a second language, I am not worried about losing students to it just yet, although it can help them with their studies. 

Any language student can tell you; direct translations rarely work. Technology can help you in some ways. For writing, you can use an online translator to do the work for you. As for speaking, you can use smartphone applications or pocket translators that translate your speech to the language you want. There are even earphones that offer “instant” spoken translations.

I’m not afraid that technology will destroy my career in teaching English communication, and here’s why. It is flawed. It is slow. It is a barrier between people. It can’t convey nuance. It doesn’t and can never understand the culture of the language, the people using it, and assist you in expressing your words only as a human can.

My greatest fear is people using technology and completely trusting it to communicate what they want to say. Recently at a doctor’s consultation, my limited Japanese was better than the smartphone translator I used as a back-up.

At the moment, I think technology is a good tool to assist your learning, it’s good for informing you. On the other hand, it’s not good for communicating on your behalf because of the limitations listed. Learning, in the most part, is being informed whereas a conversation is an exchange.

I would rather talk to a person and make a connection, however limited, than to talk at some technology and trust it to convey my voice. I will express what I want to say, and I need information for that, technology can do that for me and only that.
