My name is Duncan Brown and I am an English Facilitator, here are some of my thoughts about learning the English language.
Cultural Differences
I was pleasantly surprised by how popular lifelong learning is in Japan, and it doesn’t stop there. It seems to me, people of all ages are actively exercising their bodies, minds, and purposes in their lives.
In the U.K., Night School does exist, and Public Libraries can offer a wealth of learning experiences for adult learners, but I feel people here in Japan are much more motivated to gain a new skill or maintain an old one.
Fingers in many pies
We see our fair share of people who want to acquire or maintain their English skills, which has influenced my thoughts on this. Not only do they take our classes, but they also pursue many other diverse interests that are creative, practical, or therapeutic.
Quoting a quote: apparently, Gandhi said, “Live each day as if it were your last; learn as if you will live forever”. The idea is to live in the moment, be purposeful with your actions, and not stop learning. If it were literally my last day alive, I definitely wouldn’t spend it learning something!
Spoilt for choice
I find it interesting to see how many places are available for adult learners, such as dedicated schools, Adult Learning Centres, Lifelong Learning Centres, or Culture Centres. There are also many private facilities to hire to hold classes. I have even given lessons at students’ homes and in cafes! The experience may be different, and so too the student, but the purpose was the same; people wanted to learn something.
Live forever!
Japan, having an ageing population, is well known; It was recently reported that there are over 100,000 Japanese people who are 100 years old or older. How many hours of learning is that?!
Other countries are interested in the longevity of the Japanese, and I think a major factor is the activity of exercising the body and mind.
I believe it is an open secret here that a healthier way of being is Lifelong Learning.
