My name is Duncan Brown and I am an English Facilitator, here are some of my thoughts about learning the English language.
Out of practice
Masami and I haven’t written a blog for a little while now, so much so that my sister (in England) contacted me to see if we were okay (in Japan). Yes, we are, thank you. Due to one reason or another, neither of us have posted on social media promoting our ideas on acquiring the English language.
Being out of practice for only a few months(!) has made my writing a slower ordeal, and because of this, I went back to re-read some of my earlier posts. After glancing at each title and randomly selecting ones to read, I noticed a common theme, be consistent.
Knolwedge and Experience
It was encouraging and motivating to see that my beliefs and advice to acquire English haven’t changed too much over the years. The foundation is the same but my knowledge and experience has grown through practice and learning more to support our students’ growth.
The content from these earlier writings often repeated the same topics: learning tips, motivation, determination, cultural differences, enjoying the experience, and not being so hard on yourself.
Trying to sum up my previous thoughts on using the English language is difficult but here goes:
- Perfect English? What’s that?
- Communicative English? That’s great!
- Your English? The best!
Our philosophy
Going back to my previous articles reminded me of our philosophy for helping Japanese people with their English language, “Find your own voice”. Now that I have gone back and reviewed my earlier experiences and learning, I have a better footing to start writing again and to go forward building on what I know.
Revisiting the past to help your future
This is a lesson for all, it’s easy to forget what you have learned, experienced, and especially, your mindset, when you have stopped doing it for a while. After a break, you need to go back to help you go forward.
